International Translation Day: A Profession Where It’s About More Than Words

You’ve probably experienced a situation where you’re explaining something in a foreign language and suddenly realise: the words are correct, but the meaning hasn’t come across. With written texts, this happens even more often — and the consequences can be more serious than an awkward pause.

On September 30, the world celebrates International Translation Day — a day dedicated to the people who help us read books, conclude agreements, enter universities, receive medical treatment abroad, and simply understand one another. Let’s take a look at where the holiday came from, what makes this year special, and why professional translation is about much more than knowing a language.

Where the Holiday Came From

The date is associated with Saint Jerome of Stridon — the author of the Vulgate, the canonical Latin translation of the Bible. He is considered the patron saint of translators, and his feast day falls on September 30.

The International Federation of Translators (FIT), founded in 1953, proposed in 1991 that the date be recognised as a professional celebration. Then, in 2017, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution officially recognising September 30 as International Translation Day. So this is not simply a professional holiday — it is also a recognition of the role language professionals play in bringing people and nations closer together and supporting dialogue, mutual understanding and peace.

The 2026 Theme: “The Power of Being Understood”

Each year, FIT chooses a theme for the celebration. In 2026, the theme is “Language Diversity and Language Rights”, with the subtitle “The Power of Being Understood.”

The idea is that translation, interpreting and terminology are fundamental to language inclusion — helping people access information, services, education and healthcare regardless of the language they speak.

For Ukraine, this theme is particularly relevant. Over the past few years, millions of Ukrainians have found themselves in foreign-language environments — in hospitals, schools, government institutions and workplaces. In each of these situations, high-quality translation can help people navigate new circumstances and adapt more fully to their surroundings.

Why Translation Is About More Than Knowing a Language

Here are a few things that become clear only when you work with texts professionally:

Context is everything. The same word can require a different translation in a legal contract, a medical document or a marketing brochure.

Format matters. Certificates, statements, transcripts, diplomas and contracts often have specific requirements regarding formatting, terminology and the spelling of names. A small error in a surname or date can result in a document being rejected.

Terminology is a discipline of its own. Medicine, pharmaceuticals, law and technology all rely on established terminology. A word that is merely “similar in meaning” is not necessarily an acceptable alternative.

Confidentiality is not optional. Personal documents, medical records and financial papers all require responsible handling of sensitive information.

Machine Translation: A Tool, Not a Replacement

Neural networks and automated translation tools are extremely useful today. They can provide a quick overview of a text or help you understand an email or a menu.

However, when it comes to legally significant documents, medical information or important business correspondence, relying on a machine alone can be risky. An algorithm is not responsible for the consequences of a translation — a professional is.

Interestingly, the theme of the FIT World Congress — “Master the Machine: Shaping a Smart Future” — reflects this very idea: technology is becoming a tool in the translator’s hands, rather than a replacement for the translator.

When You Should Turn to a Translation Agency

  • you need documents translated for education, employment or relocation abroad;
  • the document must be accepted by an official institution, such as a notary, embassy, university or migration authority;
  • you are dealing with medical records, test results or instructions for medicines;
  • you need an accurate translation of contracts, certificates, statements or other official documents;
  • you are not sure whether a text translated “by eye” or with an app will be understood exactly as intended.

A Few Words About Translate Innova

Translate Innova is a translation agency that was established within Bioscience Group, one of Ukraine’s leading pharmaceutical groups. This means we are accustomed to the highest standards of accuracy: in the pharmaceutical industry, a mistake in a single word can have real consequences for people’s health.

We bring the same approach — careful attention to terminology, multi-level quality checks and respect for confidentiality — to every assignment, including the translation of personal documents for private clients.

Over the years, we have built an experienced team with expertise in translating some of the most complex regulatory documents in the pharmaceutical industry. When translating a document, we consider how it will be interpreted by a regulator, a specific audience or a healthcare professional.

Our team works with people and for people. We see every text not simply as “the next job in the queue”, but as part of someone’s story, case or important life step: entering university, receiving medical treatment, relocating, working or doing business.

Our goal is to help Ukrainian and international companies operate confidently in the global environment, while ensuring that language barriers never become an obstacle to people’s access to quality medicines and healthcare services.

So, on International Translation Day, we would like to sincerely thank translators, editors, localisers, terminologists and interpreters — everyone who makes the world a little easier to understand every day and helps build bridges between people.

Thank you for the work you do to make the world more understandable.
Happy International Translation Day!
